Industrial Coatings & Protective Systems

At Dean McCathie Painter & Decorator, we extend our services beyond domestic and decorative work — offering specialist industrial coatings and protective systems for factories, warehouses, steel structures, metal cladding, and industrial infrastructure.
Industrial coatings are engineered to resist corrosion, chemical attack, abrasion, weathering, impact, heat and UV. We supply, specify, and apply a full range of coating systems to protect your investments, prolong asset life, and maintain safety and aesthetics.

Our Industrial Coating Services

System Coating Type

  • Epoxy Resin Coatings
  • High-build Epoxy / Multi-layer Epoxy
  • Polyurethane & Hybrid Coatings
  • Silicone / Silicone-modified Coatings
  • Cut-Edge Corrosion Protection / Treatment
  • Fusion-Bonded Epoxy (FBE) Powder Coating
  • Conversion Coatings (e.g. Chromate / Phosphate)
  • Abrasive / Abrasion Resistant Coatings
  • Protective Overcoats & Topcoats
  • Identification & Safety Coatings

Purpose & Characteristics

  • Excellent chemical resistance, durability, adhesion. Can be used in heavy-duty environments.
  • Thick coats for high protection against abrasion and impact.
  • Good flexibility, UV resistance, coatings that can handle movement and weather.
  • Allows for high-temperature exposure, some chemical resistance.
  • Specifically designed to protect exposed metal edges (“cut edges”) where coating peel-back or corrosion is most likely.
  • A powder-based thermoset epoxy that’s fused onto steel for excellent corrosion protection.
  • As pre-treatment layers to improve adhesion and corrosion resistance.
  • Coatings with embedded hard particles or formulated for wear resistance.
  • Final finishes that provide UV stability, gloss, color, and weather protection.
Colour-coded coatings, hazard markings, floor demarcation lines, industrial identification.

Typical Uses / Notes

  • Floors, containment areas, workshop zones, tanks, concrete surfaces.
  • Industrial floors, loading docks, heavy machinery bases.
  • External steelwork, cladding, bridges, structural components.
  • Heat exchangers, chimneys, etc.
  • Roof sheet overlaps, sheet ends, laps in cladding and roof panels.
  • Pipe coatings, structural steel, pre-coated components.
  • Before applying topcoats, especially on metals.
  • Floors in abrasive environments, hoppers, chutes, etc.
  • All exterior metal and structural surfaces.
  • Safety zones, process lines, pipes, structure identification.

Cut-Edge Corrossion

One of the more specialised and critical services in industrial coating work is cut-edge corrosion treatment. When metal roof or cladding sheets are cut to size, the factory-applied protective coating is often compromised at those exposed edges.

Over time, moisture and corrosion can begin at those “cut edges,” causing coating peel-back and structural degradation.
We follow proven protocols for treating cut-edge corrosion:

1. Inspection / Survey to identify areas where peel-back or corrosion is present.
2. Surface preparation — cleaning, high-pressure wash, mechanical feathering, removal of loose rust and coatings.
3. Sealing / Filleting of overlaps — applying a sealant or mastic to create a smooth fillet in sheet overlaps.
4. Application of a protective basecoat and overcoat — using compatible corrosion-resistant coatings, often with warranties (e.g. 10 to 15 years) offered.

We also work with well-known systems such as Giromax Edgecoat, which is a recognised cut-edge corrosion treatment used across the UK.

How We Work / Our Approach

• Specifications & Consultation – We work with client engineers, designers, and architects to choose the correct coating system for the environment, substrate, exposure, and maintenance cycle.
• Surface Preparation – Critical in industrial work. We employ grit-blasting, power washing, chemical cleaning or mechanical tools to ensure the surfaces are ready.
• Application Methods – Airless spray, plural-component spray, brush / roller (for touch-ups), and powder coating where applicable.
• Quality Control & Testing – Film thickness checks, adhesion tests, holiday (spark) testing on coatings, inspections.
• Warranty & Maintenance – Many industrial coatings carry manufacturer warranties. We can arrange maintenance contracts for re-coating or inspection schedules.
• Colour Identification & Safety Marking – We can apply colour-coded schemes for process lines, hazard areas, zones, pipework, safety demarcation, etc.
